The Story of the Prodigal Son

March 31, 2008

The Gospel of Luke tells a story familiar to us all about a son coming to his father for forgiveness and it being granted.  This is a common plot in many a story and this could well be the origin of it.  All of us grow up wanting to leave home at some point whether we have a conflict with our parents or we just want to be more independent.  This story has many different emotions that show throughout our three characters; elder son, younger son and father.  In the case of the elder son he shows that he strives to be on his own and he is tired of the monotony that surrounds his father’s farm.  He wants a life where he can truly be alive and do what he wants when he wants.  This attitude of the elder son is taken fine by the father who provides the means by which his son can go out and live this kind of lifestyle he so desperately desires.  If this act on the part of the father is the right one or not we do not know.  All we can imagine is that he is doing this to try and teach his son a lesson and what better way to teach a lesson than personal experience.  The son goes out with his father’s blessing (and money,) and proceeded to live a lavish lifestyle until his funds run out and he is forced to live with pigs to have any chance of survival.  At this point he runs back to his father to ask him for the help that he desperately needs and his father receives his son unquestioningly.

This acceptance by father leads us to our next point and that is what this does to his loyal younger son.  The younger son has been slaving away in the fields for his father his whole life obeying his every command and then his brother comes home after wronging the father and is enthusiastically accepted and even offered a feast.  This acceptance naturally spurs jealousy and anger in the younger son and rightfully does this.  One cannot blame the father for accepting his eldest son nor could you blame the son for felling anger over this same event.  It is the Christian way to forgive those who remorse but it is also human nature to ire those unfaithful who get praised.

In our own life we all have these types of situations to some extent.  My younger cousin who is starting high school this fall has been a miscreant at his last school for a couple of years now reeking havoc in whatever he did.  But lately he has started to mature and he is beginning to see the error in his ways.  His parents forgave him with open arms as he apologized for causing all this trouble throughout middle school.  Sometimes we just have to let things drop and forgive to have any chance to move on to the next stage in our life.  Without this forgiveness we would not be able to advance and would and we would be at a stand still in our life.

Evaluation of the Peer Group Response

I found that this activity was useful to a certain extent. It is very limited because of the time restriction but it did work better than last essays peer review session. I also found that both Jaclyn and Josue’s paper were very interesting to read. Jaclyn wrote about tipping at Outback Steak House and it was interesting to see what all the waiters go through to get the job, the training was intense and I never would have imagined how hard it was to become a waiter. The work that they go through really makes you appreciate the waiters at the restaurants that you normally would have taken for granted. Josue’s paper had a very similar affect on me. After reading his paper on Taxis, I thought about how they too are very under appreciated. Overall both papers were well written and a joy to read.

Family Guy

March 20, 2008

Let me start by saying that Family Guy is an absolutely amazing show.  It is enormously funny and entertaining and every episode has something new to laugh about.  With this being said, I am sick of Family Guy.  That’s right, it is an amazing show and I am absolutely sick of it.  This is because of people.  Ever since the show has grown in popularity, people have been making references to it with every little thing that happens in life.  This is the reason I am so sick of it.  The over use of comparing it to every day things just completely ruins the greatness of the show.  Sure the first time someone makes the reference it’s funny, but after that it just gets annoying.

This phenomenon has happened many times.  Take Napoleon Dynamite for instance.  When I first saw this it was really funny and enjoyable.  About a week afterwards I was so pissed because of the unbelievable amount of quotes from this movie that I heard.  Every other line that came out of someone’s mouth, was movie quote from Napoleon Dynamite.  Another example is more recently with Borat.  This movie is still getting over-quoted and I just cannot take it.

Yes, these are very funny movies, but everyone is absolutely killing them and it irks me very much.  It makes you never want to see the movie again so you are not only doing an injustice to the people who have to put up with listening to you but you are also screwing over the people who came up with these great movies.   So please, I ask you Mr. Movie Overquoter, stop now before it gets worse.  We are all sick of you and your overkill.  Thank you.

No Meat on Fridays. No Thank You.

March 18, 2008

The catholic church says that during lent meat is not to be eaten on Friday. Most catholics follow this rule blindly but i call bullshit on the church. This rule is completely unreasonable and even the Pope is admitting it. This is an ancient rule and is completely outdated and makes no sense.

Everyone in my family follows this and when i come home on Friday night, after a long day at work, i want a nice juicy steak. I do not want to settle for fish or pizza. No! I want to eat meat and i am not willing to stop eating meat just to please the catholic church when the Pope is willing to admit that this rule is bogus.

What i mean when i say that the Pope is willing to admit that this rule is bogus is that a couple years ago when St. Patrick’s Day fell on a Friday during Lent, the Pope permitted  the eating of meat for this day so the Irish can have their corned beef.  If the Pope hadn’t done this i might be willing to follow the no meat on Fridays rule, but because of this exception that the Pope permitted i believe that this rule  is ridiculous.  You either have to be willing to be consistent with your rules or just get rid of them completely.  I am very sick of the Catholic Church being so hypocritical.

I’m tired of being reminded every time i indulge in a juicy cheeseburger on Fridays in Lent that you can’t eat meat on Friday’s.  One day this rule will be abolished and there will no longer be this problem of people disagreeing with foolish rules.  Until then i will continue to enjoy my delicious meats on Friday without any remorse.  Hopefully you now realize the nonsense that is the no meat on Friday’s rule.  You are more than welcome to use this argument when you are enjoying your roast beef melt next Friday and you are harassed by everyone.  Good luck.

Business Law . . . Gay!

March 18, 2008

Business law is a terrible class.  It’s not really business and it’s not really law.  It’s like someone just wanted to mess with St. Johns students and make it a core class.  They decided to make it like a graduate course as well.  Along with having to memorize the constitution, we also have to know all of New York’s laws along with the federal laws.  To expect out of students in a core class to possess the knowledge of a law major is ridiculous.  Accompanying this course is a midterm and final.  The midterm was already taken and consisted of 100 multiple choice questions, all of which were unreasonably specific involving unimportant laws which are never even dealt with.  After a class average of a 52 one would think that the teacher would curve the test or offer extra credit.  But no.  Some teachers remain stubborn and set in their ways and as a result will produce a class with 60% of the students failing.  Business law is just a bad class overall and unnecessarily hard.
